  1. 1895-1964. German pathologist, discoverer of
  2. antibacterial sulphonamide drugs. He found in
  3. 1932 that a coal-tar dye called Prontosil red
  4. contains chemicals with powerful
  5. antibacterial properties. Sulphanilamide
  6. became the first of the sulphonamide drugs,
  7. used before antibiotics were discovered to
  8. treat a wide range of conditions, including
  9. pneumonia and septic wounds. Nobel Prize for
  10. Physiology and Medicine 1939.
